Name: Traditional Japanese Cedar Box
Date: November 20, 2025
Time: 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM PST
Event Description:
In this hands-on class, you’ll learn to craft a traditional Japanese wooden toolbox using hand tools, following techniques passed down by generations of shokunin (craftsmen). Rooted in centuries of Japanese woodworking tradition, this project emphasizes simplicity, practicality, and respect for your tools. You’ll work with lightweight, durable cedar wood to create a classic rectangular box featuring a sliding lid secured by a wooden wedge and assembled with traditional wooden nails. The humble, functional design reflects the Japanese values of modesty and craftsmanship, focusing on utility rather than ornate joinery. While traditionally used to hold woodworking tools, this versatile box can also be used to store and organize a variety of other items. Once you learn to build one box, you can make any size box. By the end of the class, you’ll have built your own authentic toolbox and gained valuable skills in traditional hand tool woodworking.
